Gretna - After Katrina

Posted on: 2006-07-03
By, Ronnie C. Harris, Mayor, City of Gretna

Life after Katrina is slowly returning. Residents are cleaning up. Businesses are opening. Traffic is getting more congested. Now, as the long-term recovery begins, our community is facing its greatest challenge since the founding of Gretna.

Many of our former residents have relocated during the evacuation and have found jobs and schools elsewhere. As Gretna’s pre-Katrina single-family housing stock was roughly 50% owner occupied and 50% rental, our city will be able to provide housing to many new residents. This reshuffling of our population will allow those who have lost homes in other devastated areas of the metropolitan region to locate in our city.

Who are they? They are the ones who have decided to stay and rebuild our New Orleans community. They are the ones who refuse to give in and who will commit to get involved to build a better place to live. What can Gretna do to help? Let’s show them how our city can reach out and support them in this time of need. Let’s welcome them as new residents of a new Gretna.

Our short-term goals of recovery are now changing to rebuilding and a vision for the future. The City is planning to market itself as a great community to relocate and raise a family. Our new residents will enjoy such events as Gretna Goblin night, Veteran’s Day and the Gretna Heritage Festival. Our businesses are reopening and jobs are available.

Now that our recovery has begun, it is time for everyone to take stock of our bruised but good fortune that we were spared further devastation. I ask everyone to take a moment and thank our Police Department for their brave action, our City workers who provided relief for those who could not leave, and our volunteer firefighters who remained and protected our property. Most of all, I want to thank you, our residents, who supported our efforts in maintaining a safe and strong community during and after this time of emergency. You are the reason Gretna is a great place to live.
